The biannual World Space Risk Forum was held February 28-March 1 in Dubai. The forum provides a venue for space business leaders, agencies, insurers, and brokers to openly discuss matters of finance and risk relating to the space industry. Sessions at this year’s forum included Future Space Activities & Risk Management Activities, Capital for Space Finance, How to Improve Coverages, Space Environment and Liabilities, and New Technologies & Markets. Arianespace, the leading commercial launch services provider and largest generator of insurance premiums, had a high profile at the forum with Chairman and CEO Jean-Yves Le Gall , Senior Vice President of Programs Louis Laurent, and Senior Vice President-Finance Jean Max Peuch all in attendance. “For Arianespace, we view our relationship with the space insurers as a true partnership that benefits all players in the market, including the customers that book payloads on our launchers,” said Peuch. Arianespace held a half day briefing at the event for the space insurance sector’s major players. The World Space Risk Forum took the opportunity to present the Space Risk Management Award to the Space Data Association (SDA). The SDA is a non-profit international association of satellite operators including Inmarsat, Intelsat, and SES. The association provides radio frequency interference mitigation, avoidance manoevre planning, and on-demand conjunction analysis.
“We formed the SDA as we saw there was a critical need for improvements in the collaboration between space operators in order to ensure the preservation of the physical environment we operate in, as well as to reduce the impact of service-affecting RF interference,” said SDA chairman Stewart Sanders upon receiving the award. “It is very pleasing to recognised by our peers for the significant progress we have made in both these areas.”
