On August 31, a spectacular solar filament eruption released a coronal mass ejection (CME) that struck Earth on September 3. The 500 km/s CME was not released directly at the planet, so the resulting geomagnetic storm was only moderate, resulting in ground currents in northern Scandinavia and aurorae in the Artic Circle.
