IAASS Course on Payload Safety and Operations

On March 19 – 23, 2012, the IAASS Payload Safety and Operations Course was held at the Canadian Space Agency’s John H. Chapman Space Centre in Longueuil, Quebec, Canada.  The course was attended by 23 students from across the Space Agency including Safety, Project and Engineering personnel.  The course covered such topics as hazard analysis, technical requirements, safety data packages, configuration management and ended with a mock payload presentation.  A new milestone was passed with this course as this was the first all electronic presentation with each student having a laptop.  Mr. Victor Chang, CSA Manager, Safety and Mission Assurance and location host stated – “The training course was excellent and very well received by all participants.  Both instructors were clear and concise; they were able to make a complex and difficult subject quite enjoyable.   I hope that we can arrange additional training courses of this high quality in the future.”

According to Paul Kirkpatrick, Instructor and Chair of the IAASS Technical Training Committee, “A real effort has been made to adapt the course to reflect the end of the Space Shuttle era by including the ISS International Partner processes and procedures.  Having some students with payload safety experience significantly contributed to the class.  Additionally, having an all electronic class considerably reduced the amount of paper used.”

The next Payload Safety and Operations Course will be held in June 11 – 15, 2012, at the Astrium Facility in Friedrichshafen, Germany.  Registration is available via the IAASS Website (www.iaass.org) or directly at http://www.congrexprojects.com/12m23/.
