Mona Lisa Tests Laser Communications

Lasers hold potential for any number of yet-to-be-developed space applications. Some ideas include shooting down space debris, laser-propelled propulsion, and communication across large distances.  This latter application got a recent boost with an artistic test by NASA: beaming an image of the Mona Lisa to its Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO).

“This pathfinding achievement sets the stage for the Lunar Laser Communications Demonstration,” says LRO researcher Richard Vondrak.  Learn more in the mission video below:
