Comet ISON, discovered September 21, 2012, presents a rare opportunity to study a “fresh” comet – one newly detached from the Oort Cloud, carrying volatiles that it will lose over time as warms in passing the Sun. NASA is determined to monitor every possible minute of the comet’s early days, using a phalanx of space and Earth-based resources to watch the icy body.
