Then-Capt. Joseph Kittinger stands next to the Excelsior gondola which, supported by a helium balloon, carried him 102,800 feet above Earth. Kittinger set historical records for highest balloon ascent, highest parachute jump, longest drogue fall and fastest speed by a human being through the atmosphere.
