On February 24, 1997, a routine ignition of an oxygen-generating canister caused a fire, which suddenly went out of control. Crew wore gas mask and eventually managed to extinguish the fire. Smoke filled part of the Mir space station, along with a Soyuz spacecraft, their only way to go home.
