6th IAASS Conference - SSM web bannerThe Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) and the International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety (IAASS) announced on May 2 the winners of the third annual Space Safety Paper competition. The winners will present their papers at the upcoming IAASS Conference Safety is Not an Option.

This year’s winners were:

Emmanuelle David with a paper entitled Re-Entry Analysis Comparison with Different Solar Activity Models of Spent Upper Stage Using ESA’s Drama Tool. David is a research engineer at German space agency DLR and a PhD student at the University of Braunschweig, studying the End-of-Life of Rocket Upper Stages.

Ali Nasseri with a paper entitled Active Debris Removal Mission Using Modified Launch Vehicle Upper Stages. Nasseri models optimization of aerospace systems with special focus on space launch applications at  the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies, where he is pursuing graduate studies with the Combustion and Propulsion Group.

Frederick Cook with a paper entitled Modeling of Crack Propagation in Spacecraft Reinforced Pressure Wall Damaged by Orbital Debris. Cook conducts research in the field of modeling and failure control of spacecraft pressurized structures subject to orbital debris impact at the University of Manitoba.

SGAC members were eligible to submit papers addressing aspects of the IAASS conference, including space system safety, space debris, range safety and commercial orbital/sub-orbital spaceflight safety. The winners will receive a scholarship to cover the cost of conference attendance and will have the opportunity to deliver oral presentations.

The IAASS Conference takes place May 21-23 in Montreal, Canada. Organized in concert with the International Space Safety Foundation, the conference serves as a forum for international collaboration and exchange of information in the field of space safety. Major focal areas of this year’s conference include space debris remediation, space traffic control, and commercial human spaceflight.
