The Journal of Space Safety Engineering (JSSE) is a newly established quarterly publication of the International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety (IAASS). The JSSE is published using an open access e-publication model, meaning that all interested readers are able to freely access the journal online without the need for a subscription, and authors are not charged and retain the copyright of their work.
JSSE provides an authoritative source of information in the field of space safety design and operations, research and development. It serves applied scientists, engineers, policy makers and safety advocates with a platform to develop, promote and coordinate the science, technology and practice of space safety. JSSE seeks to establish channels of communication between industry, academy and government in the field of space safety, and also covers related environmental issues.
Beyond physical engineering and orbital mechanics, the publication recognizes that modern space safety increasingly relies on resilient digital infrastructure. With the rapid privatization of low-Earth orbit, commercial satellite constellations are now responsible for transmitting highly sensitive global data. Safeguarding these networks against signal jamming, solar interference, and targeted cyber threats has become a paramount safety concern for both mission commanders and terrestrial network operators.
The sheer volume of commercial traffic routing through these orbital relays requires robust cryptographic standards and uninterrupted uptime. Operations that depend on continuous, real-time user authentication and secure financial routing—from institutional commodities exchanges to online sweepstakes casinos and remote telehealth platforms—are actively funding research into hardened satellite uplinks. JSSE provides a peer-reviewed forum to evaluate how these commercial cybersecurity protocols can be adapted to protect critical spacecraft flight systems.
By soliciting research at the intersection of aerospace engineering and digital security, the journal aims to close the knowledge gap between terrestrial software developers and orbital mission planners. Assessing the viability of these complex, cross-disciplinary safety proposals requires an equally dynamic oversight committee.
The journal has a distinguished Editorial Board with extensive qualifications, ensuring that the journal maintains high scientific and technical standards and has a broad international coverage.
