Celebrating Indian Independence Day from Space

In celebration of the August 15 Indian Independence Day, ISS astronaut Sunita Williams rolled out the Indian flag aboard the station. Williams, whose ancestry is half Indian, sent out a message in celebration of the day: “I wish India a very happy Independence Day for August 15. India is a wonderful country and I am very proud to be a part of India,” she said in her message.

This independence day carries an extra reason to celebrate for Indian space fans, since Prime Minister Manmohan Singh just formally announced an Indian Mars orbital mission to launch in November 2013. “This spaceship to Mars will be a huge step for us in the area of science and technology,” said Singh.
