On April 27, the Space Shuttle Enterprise was flown aboard a shuttle aircraft carrier from Virginia to New York, where it will be put on display at the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum.
The shuttle, which served as a test model but never flew in space, was greeted by Leonard Nimoy who had attended its naming along with other Star Trek cast members. “This is a reunion for me,” said Nimoy, recalling that first meeting. The shuttle was renamed Enterprise after the starship on Star Trek following a petition by fans of that show to then president Gerald Ford. Its original name had been Constitution.
In June the shuttle will be moved by barge up the Hudson River from John F. Kennedy International Airport to the museum.
