On Friday, August 31, Neil Armstrong was remembered in a private ceremony in Cincinatti, Ohio that included family, fellow astronauts, and a naval fighter plane salute. At the same time NASA’s Kennedy Space Center held an open memorial ceremony, while the flag of the United States flew at half-mast across the country in honor of the fallen legend. A national memorial service is scheduled to be held on September 12 in Washington D.C. As NASA administrator Charles Bolden said on the occassion: “A grateful nation offers praise and salutes a humble servant who answered the call and dared to dream.”
Correction: Neil Armstrong was not laid to rest during the memorial service in Cincinatti on August 31 as originally reported. By his request, Armstrong is to be buried at sea on September 14.
