On August 16, NASA’s Kennedy Space Center announced the first ever RocketMan Triathlon. As current ISS astronaut Sunita Williams prepares to participate in the first triathlon in space, NASA is inviting triathletes to bike through their space complex back on Earth. The RocketMan Triathlon, which is scheduled to take place May 5, 2013, will give participants  a view of the historic Space Shuttle complex on their cycling leg. According to a press release, “the highlight of the bike ride takes cyclists down the same roadway used by space-bound astronauts and around the perimeter of Launch Pads 39-A and 39-B – the launching points for all of NASA’s Space Shuttle and Apollo missions to the moon.”

In order to fit in the launch pad loop, the traditional triathlon cycling distance has been extended from 19 miles (30.5 km) to 34 miles (54.7 km).
