A Close-up View of the Solar Eclipse

1

The annular eclipse that was enjoyed across southeast Asia and the western United States on May 20 was captured in close-up by the JAXA-led Hinode spacecraft. Hinode follows a sun-synchronous low Earth orbit, allowing for continuous monitoring of the sun. Hinode’s three instruments are geared toward understanding the Sun’s magnetic field and prediction of coronal mass ejections.
