In November 2011, NASA published the first of a two volume System Safety Handbook.  “This volume provides a high level view of the concepts,” says Homayoon Dezfuli in his preface, “and is intended for systems engineers, system safety specialists, and system safety managers.” Dezfuli is a NASA System Safety Technical Fellow, Chair of NASA’s System Safety Steering Group and manager of the handbook project. The book covers topics from the definition of safety and historical view of risk management to system safety ownership via the Risk-Informed Safety Case (RISC).

According to the volume, subtitled System Safety Framework and Concepts for Implementation,  safety is “freedom from those conditions that can cause death, injury, occupational illness, damage to or loss of equipment or property, or damage to the environment.”
